How this calculator works

Boxes = round up[(base area × waste factor) ÷ coverage per box].

Worked example

A 12 ft × 10 ft room with 10% waste needs 132 ft². At 22 ft² per box, buy 6 boxes.

Assumptions to check

  • The room is rectangular.
  • Coverage per box is taken from the product packaging.
  • The result rounds whole boxes up and excludes underlay, trim, labor, and delivery.

FAQ

What waste percentage should I use?

A simple straight installation often uses 5–10%. Diagonal layouts, pattern matching, small pieces, and irregular rooms can need more.

Can I combine several rooms?

Yes. Add the base areas first when the same flooring and waste rate apply, or calculate each room separately.

Should I keep spare material?

Many owners keep spare pieces for future damage or repairs. Add that amount to your waste allowance or buy an extra box.
