Base liters = (area x coats) / coverage per coat. Purchase liters = base liters x (1 + waste / 100). Kits = round up(purchase liters / kit size).

Worked example

A 5 m x 4 m garage floor (20 m2), 2 coats, at 5 m2/L coverage needs 8 L base, 8.8 L with 10% waste - two 5 L kits.

Assumptions to check

This is a thin film-build coating tool (coverage measured in m2 per liter per coat, or convertible from a manufacturer mil rating), not a casting/pour-thickness calculator - use the epoxy resin calculator for table-tops, art, and deep pours.
Coverage rate varies by product, substrate porosity, and application method (roller vs. squeegee) - always confirm against the datasheet.
Surface preparation (grinding, priming, moisture testing) is not included.

How is this different from the epoxy resin calculator?

Epoxy resin (casting) works from a pour thickness in millimeters and an A/B mix ratio for a deep, self-leveling pour. This tool works from a coverage rate in m2 per liter per coat, the way floor coating manufacturers publish it, for a thin multi-coat film.

What does "mils" mean on a coating datasheet?

A mil is one-thousandth of an inch (25.4 microns), used for dry film thickness. Convert the datasheet mil rating and spread rate into an m2/L coverage figure for this calculator, or use the manufacturer's published coverage directly.

How many coats does a garage floor need?

Two coats (a base/primer coat plus a top coat) is a common minimum for durability; heavy-traffic areas may need a dedicated primer coat plus two top coats - follow the product system.
